  • Issue that affects the connectivity with an instance of SQL Server Analysis Services from any application in Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2
  • Windows Explorer stops responding for 30 seconds whenever a file or directory is created or renamed after installing some programs
  • Welcome screen hanging for 30 seconds while logging into the computer, if you had set the desktop background to a solid color.
  • You don’t get any warning when you try to delete more than 1000 files and all the files gets deleted permanently without moving to the Recycle bin.

    1. This was included as a critical on WU on Tuesday for me, so I installe it rebooted. After reboot I got a message in the middle of a black screen stating
       
      Setting up personalized settings for
      Windows Desktop Update
       
      This stayed like that for a few hours with the drive thrashing constantly. I left it overnight and it was still the same so I called MS who said the file was not intended for myself (x64 win7 pro) even though it had been offered as a critical fix and I have some of the symptoms, welcome screen hanging, 30 delay after file creation/deletion.
       
      Basically they told me to ctrl/alt/del out of the window and enter safe mode and uninstall the update. Whilst this fixed the problem, it still leaves ,e wondering why it was offered (when it was relevant to me) but they say it wasn’t and it went on to cause the mayhem described.

      it is indeed Microsoft’s fault affecting many users like you….I can see many users complaining about the problems they are facing after installing this KB980408 update
