The update KB2388210 resolves the compatibility issues like “The application is installed incorrectly”, “The application causes system instability”, “The functions of the application do not work correctly”..etc. When you see these sort of alerts too frequently, it’s high time that you should install this update.

Microsoft has released the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Release Candidate to testers, available as a free download from Microsoft website. Microsoft initially released the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Beta(update KB976932) in July 2010. With the release of the Release Candidate (RC), Microsoft is gearing up for the final release of the Windows 7 SP1 which is expected to happen somewhere during the beginning of 2011. Now that the Release Candidates for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 are available for download, those who have already installed the beta versions of the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 must uninstall the same before going ahead with installing the SP1 RC. Please note that you must have an RTM (Release To Manufacturing) version of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on your PC before you can install the Release Candidate.

The Release Candidate includes the previous updates that are delivered via Windows Update along with continual updates to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system platforms.

The download size for Windows 7 SP1 RC  (build version 976932) for 32-bit version is 514.7 MB (windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe), where as it is 865.4 MB for the 64-bit version (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe) of the OS. You need to validate your Windows before you can proceed to the download page.

A new October 2010 Cumulative Update for Windows Media Center in Windows 7 (KB2284742) has been released by Microsoft. The update rollup addresses various issues related to Windows Media Center in Windows 7.

This October 2010 Cumulative Update resolves the following issues in Windows 7’s Windows Media Center:

  • Scheduling performance issue
  • Issues in Dr Watson, occurring in some upgrade scenarios resulting a program crash when you try to open the Windows Media Center
  • Another significant issue in Dr Watson occurring during a typical database maintenance process, finally resulting in the Mcupdate.exe crash.

This update applies to all the Windows 7 editions i.e, Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprises and Ultimate. This update also includes some of the previous related updates released by Microsoft, including KB981078, KB977863, KB981129, KB981130 and a Hotfix KB2266287.

Not too long ago, we had written about the VLC Media Player iPad app being available for download. The app has now been upgraded to support the iPhone (iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch devices besides the iPad. The updated version 1.1.0 adds native support to delete files from within the VLC player application without needing to go through iTunes. Other minor upgrades to the app include recognition for more extensions and faster decoding for the media files. While there are some issues reported already, it can play wider range of video format files on the iPhone.

Microsoft has released security update KB2360131 to  address the vulnerability that was mentioned in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-071.

The users of Windows Vista and Windows XP have been advised to install the update KB2360131 to address the security issue that could allow an attacker to gain control over a computer running Microsoft Internet Explorer by executing a remote code.

The much talked-about updated Yahoo Messenger app for iPhone is now official, available via Apple’s App Store. The latest version (version 2.0) has included video and voice chat (streaming included) to your friends in Yahoo Messenger over Wi-Fi and 3G on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 models. The app however doesn’t support video calling on the iPhone Touch 4G!

The Yahoo Messenger 2.0 iPhone app has been upgraded to work with iOS 4.1.  The new features include IM, SMS messaging and notifications and ability to call your friends who are on Windows Live Messenger. This new version of Yahoo Messenger application for iPhone is touted by some as a real competitor to Apple’s FaceTime.

Even though we are in the age of Internet Explorer 9 , there are still handful of websites that were designed specifically for use with IE7 (or even IE6!) and which may break when rendered in the Inter Explorer 8.

To solve the issues with such websites, Microsoft has included “Compatibility Mode” in IE8. Whenever the browser finds that the URL entered by the user points to a website that is mostly compatibility with IE7 and older versions, the browser will quickly switch to the Compatibility Mode to render the content as it would be seen in the older versions of the Internet Explorer.

IE8 (as well as IE9) maintains a native list of websites that are to be rendered “Compatibility Mode”. To view this Compatibility view list in your browser, type the following in the address bar:

You can also add your own websites  to the list (IE8 or IE9) by clicking on the Alt button > Tools > Compatibility View Settings:

Microsoft now and then updates the Compatibility View List by including or removing websites to the list. It is rather surprising to find that websites from Microsoft own domain are featured in the list (Microsoft.com and Live.com). Microsoft has issued the security update KB978464, dedicated to solve the issues with Microsoft Silverlight.

The update KB978464 contains the file “runtime\Silverlight.3.0.exe”. From this it can be said that the update actually is intended for the Microsoft Silverlight version 3. But the latest version of the product is Silverlight 4. You might need to check the version of Microsoft Silverlight installed on your computer. If you have the latest version on your computer, the update will fail to install saying “A newer version is already installed”.

After releasing DirectX 10 for Windows Vista, Microsoft has released its successor DirectX 11 with Direct3D 11 keeping Windows 7 gamers in mind.

DirectX include the APIs like DirectDraw, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, DirectSound. The “X” in DirectX denote all these APIs. DirectX 11 (with Direct3D 11) for Windows 7 boasts of many feature improvements over its predecessor and promises to provide rich gaming experience for Windows users.
