Along with KB979538, Microsoft has also released KB2300535 for Windows 7 based systems. KB2300535 addresses the issues with Windows Ribbon in certain applications running on 64-bit systems or 32-bit systems with the /3GB switch enabled.

When you run a certain application that uses the /largeaddressaware option (Windows Live Movie Maker for instance), on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 systems, Windows Ribbon sometimes may not be displayed correctly and then the whole application doesn’t work on the expected lines. Microsoft released the supported Hotfix for this issue as well. Until now, users needed to download this Hotfix from Microsoft website to address this issue.

The update KB2300535 is available as Windows6.1-KB2300535-x86.msu and Windows6.1-KB2300535-x64.msu (file size: 1.8 MB for 32-bit systems and 2.9 MB for 64-bit systems). Download the file (strictly for Windows 7 systems) from the link given below. You need to restart your computer after installing this update.

Microsoft has just released a new update KB979538 to address issues with Windows 7 while using a USB video device. The issue may include unexpected shutdowns or bluescreens while using the USB video device.

The issues with USB video devices arise because of a race condition in the USB Video driver when the device is unloaded. If you didn’t know, Microsoft had already released a Hotfix to solve the issue for those Windows 7 machines that were severely affected by the issue. But now Microsoft has decided to release a software update that can be applied to all the Windows 7 machines irrespective of the issue with the USB Video device being small or severe.

Microsoft has made the public beta of Internet Explorer 9 available for download. It has been a year-and-half since the release of Internet Explorer 8 and the internet world has since been eagerly waiting for the next version of the world’s most widely used browser.

IE 9 is available for download for users using 32-bit or 64-bit versions of either Windows Vista or Windows 7 only. Windows XP users won’t be able to install this version of the Internet explorer.

IE9 integrates perfectly well with Windows 7. With IE 9, users can easily pin their favorite websites to the taskbar with custom jump lists for each site. For instance, when you pin “Twitter” to the taskbar in IE 9, you will see the following jump lists which will directly take you to whatever page you want to see on Twitter (like direct messages, @ mentions, search etc.). This might well be a handy one specially when you pin sites like Gmail etc.

Security Bulletin MS10-046 (Critical) & Update KB2286198

Microsoft has released (on August 2, 2010) a new security bulletin MS10-046 (rated critical) addressing the vulnerability in Windows Shell that could allow remote code execution (RCE).

MS10-046 security update resolves a publicly disclosed vulnerability in Windows Shell that could allow RCE through, through display of an icon of a specially crafted shortcut.

The affected operating systems include Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista (SP1 & SP2), Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Windows users can download Microsoft update KB2286198 as part of the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-046 that fixes the above said issue. United States and Canadian users can also get a free support via telephone by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY or by contacting local Microsoft subsidiary.
