[Download] Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview

IE logo

Microsoft has released the first platform preview of the upcoming Internet Explorer 10 (IE10)  browser.  Looks like Microsoft learnt lessons from the success of Chrome and is now more keen to take on it and that might be the reason why we are seeing a platform preview of Internet Explorer 10 just weeks after Internet Explorer 9 final was released. IE10 is just under three weeks of development as of now and we already have a platform preview! Internet Explorer 10 will have native support for HTML5 and supports emerging CSS3 standards like CSS3 Multi-column Layout, CSS3 Grid Layout, Flexible Box Layout, CSS3 Gradients on background images, 3D Transforms and ES5 Strict Mode etc. Microsoft has said that it would update IE10 every 8-12 weeks.

IE10 Platform Preview 1

The Platform Preview of IE10 is available only for Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). Web developers can download  the preview from the link added at the bottom of this post. The Platform Preview builds (upcoming) require some specific updates (KB2454826) to be installed on your Windows 7 machine to render Platform Preview graphics, media and printing functionalities. IE10 Platform Preview should install all the prerequisites automatically. But in case of any error during the installation, users have to manually install the updates before installing the Platform Preview. For more detailed instructions on installing the require updates prior to the installation of Platform Preview, head over to this page.

Download Internet Explorer 9 Final Now

IE9 logo

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 has moved out of beta and the final version is now available for download for Windows 7 and Windows Vista based computers. Internet Explorer 9 looks sleek with minimalistic design, no toolbars, without any toolbars. As we have covered earlier, there is no search bar in IE9 and it has been integrated to the address bar adopting the popular move that was earlier taken by Google Chrome. Changing the default search engine in IE9 is quite easy as well. All you have to do is enter your search query and choose the search engines that have added to IE9.

IE9 Search Engine address bar

When it comes to speed, IE9 is neck-to-neck with Google Chrome 10 (without considering Firefox 4, equations may change when the final version of Firefox 4 releases). New tab page in IE9 has also been revamped to show most frequently sites along with their favicons and the frequency of visit to them. What’s more? If you use Windows Phone 7, you will soon have hands on mobile version of IE9 on your device.

Download Avast Antivirus 6.0 Free

Avast free antivirus

Avast, one of the popular antivirus software vendor has recently released the Avast Free Antivirus 6.0 version with some incredible features which you  normally expect to be available only in the paid version of any antivirus program. We are talking about the new features like AutoSandbox and WebRep included in Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0.

>> Apparently AutoSandbox, the  new security feature in the new version is the first automatic virtualization feature to be included in a major antivirus program. This will be used to run any suspicious applications and scripts in a safe virtual environment completely isolated from the actual machine environment.

Avast AutoSandbox screenshot

As you can see in the above screeshot, if Avast detects a potentially unsafe or suspicious program, it will ask whether you want to open it in the virtual environment of the avast (autosandbox).  If the application is actually found to be unsafe, the virtual machine will be shut down and the original computer remains safe.

>> WebRep , another interesting feature works based on the feedback from the global Avast user community.  The feature gives ratings to any webpage you visit (including search results) in the browser. It can quickly warn you about any potentially harmful webpage that you try to visit, based on the input from the millions of Avast users.

Avast! Free Antivirus is available as free download for Windows 7 and Windows Vista users (both 32-bit and 64-bit).

Why Do Adobe Reader Need So Many Updates? – An Open Question To Adobe

Adobe-Reader-Updater

I am writing this post as an open question to Adobe. Well my questions is “Why do Adobe Reader need so many updates?”.

Today morning, I was in a hurry to book an online ticket. So, I just started my computer in a hurry. Well I expected it to start quickly, but the first Window I saw is what the image above. I thought of canceling  the update and click cancel. But by mistake, I clicked Install and there it goes. After the updation process, it restarted my PC. Quite a frustration for me in such a hurry.

I would not have freaked out so much if it was once a lifetime update but it is not. If I remember correctly, I had updated my Adobe Reader few weeks back.

I can understand why something like adobe flash player might need a few updates, but what I cannot understand is why would a PDF file reader need so many? Do the way of reading simple PDF files gets changed so many times? And why would a PDF reader update need a system restart? Well if my OS is updating then it is quite normal, but a restart for my reader update?

Well I am not the only one asking this question, I am sure that most of the users feel the same and I myself have seen such questions in many computer forums.

I think we need some kind of real good explanation from Adobe regarding the frequent updates. They should be reminded that there are other good PDF readers around for free.

This is just a plain simple question from an end user of Adobe Reader, unaware of the internal functionality of the product. Hope Adobe can keep up to bring light to us.

[Download] Windows Home Server 2011 Release Candidate

Windows Home Server

Microsoft has yesterday released the release candidate version of the upcoming Windows Home Server 2011 (WHS 2011) for testers. The product which was codenamed “Vail” during its development was previously in the news because of Microsoft’s surprise and controversial move to not to include the popular Driver Extender (DE) feature in WHS 2011. For starters, Drive Extender was a handy feature in WHS which allowed the users to merge hard drives into a storage pool that made it easy to manage all the drives. Microsoft has decided to drop this feature apparently because it thinks that the drives coming these days are big enough (storage wise) and the users may not go for the drive pooling via Drive Extender. The another limitation in WHS 2011 is that the maximum size of a partition can only be 2TB. To makeup for these limitations, Microsoft has added few new features like Move Folder Wizard which makes you to move data from one drive to another and the other being Shadow Copy which allows you to quickly return to a previous version of existing files.

If you want to test the Windows Home Server 2011, you must sign up for the Windows Home Server Connect Program using a Windows Live ID.

Check USB Flash Drives For Errors With H2testw

usb flash drive

Portable flash memory storage devices like USB flash drives (pen drives) and SD cards are in increasing demand these days, owing to their simple usage and portability. This has also lead to foray of many fake devices resembling the actual ones. They even outdo the original in looks but it is while using it actually only that you would come to know it is fake. A good USB flash drive should both read and write the data. But the fake device would fail either in writing or reading data from the device.

But until now there is no way to detect these corrupted devices. However, there is a small freeware (Windows only) that checks for write/read errors in storage media like USB flash drives, memory cards, hard drives and network cards for errors.

The usage is pretty much simple: Just download the H2testw zipped file, extract and run H2testw.exe. Select the target, the drive which you want to check for errors. Choose the amount of available space for which you want to verify the disk and hit “Write + Verify” button. You might want to free up the occupied space by formatting the device and choose the “all available space” option under the Data Volume section for more precise check.

H2testw

H2testw scan complete

Even if you have some files on your drive before running the scan, the files won’t be damaged or altered by the program if the drive is not malfunctioning. The program will create a “.h2w” file whose file size would be equivalent to the data volume you chose while scanning, You can manually delete these files after the tests are completed. If you click on “Verify” which would be enabled after the initial test, the option actually uses these .h2w files instead of running all over from the beginning again, so harm in deleting these files created by the program.

[Tip] Lock Your Desktop With Transparency

We, all the Windows users are very much used to the famous Windows + L shortcut to lock the computer when we are moving away from the system. This is just fine and serves the purpose. I have just come across a small Windows freeware that lets you lock your computer while keeping a transparent layer of your desktop screen at the background.

So you would still see the the desktop as it is, the same way as it appears if it had not been locked. But the only catch is that you need to provide the password to actually get into the system. Thus you may even tease others by allowing a sneak peek at your desktop while not allowing them to enter into it.

ClearLock screen

Download the ClearLock from the link that I have added below and run it. It will ask your for a password. When you confirm the password, the screen gets locked.
