Microsoft has released a new beta version of Microsoft Security Versions 2.0. If you are running your PC on Windows OS and couldn’t afford to buy an anti-virus software, it is strongly recommended that you download and use this free security tool from the Microsoft folks.

According to a blog post by Brandon LeBlanc, the new version of MSE (build 2.0.0375.0) is coming with the following new features:

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 Beta

Microsoft Security Essentials v2 beta is now available as free download via Microsoft Connect for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. MSE will protect your Windows PC against viruses, spyware, root kits, and Trojans. Security Essentials was launched in September 2009 replacing Windows Live OneCare.

Register yourself for Microsoft Connect to proceed to the download. There are some download issues if you go for a direct download. It is recommended that you use Microsoft File Transfer Manager (FTM) to download the file mseinstall_en_usx86.exe(7.78 MB for 32-bit) or mseinstall-en-us-amd64.exe (9.82 MB for 64-bit). This beta version is currently available in English (U.S.), Israel, and Brazilian Portuguese .

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile For Windows 7

Microsoft’s latest .NET Framework 4 Client Profile is available on Windows Update (WU) as “recommended update”  KB982670. It provides a subset of features from the .NET Framework 4.0.

The client Profile is released as an recommended update for Windows 7 and Windows Vista and as an “optional update” for Windows XP (you need to run the WU manually and select the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile to install it).

Issues:

Many Windows users have reported that they are getting Windows update error 80200053 while installing this particular update (also KB982526) on their machines. If you are getting the same error, just restart the computer and try installing afterwards, or boot in Safe Mode with Networking and install the update. You may also try to install the standalone version of the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile from the link given below:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update June 2010 For Windows 7 & Vista

Microsoft has released two important updates KB982526 (.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 update) and KB982670 (.NET Framework 4 Client Profile) for the Microsoft .NET Framework.

KB982526 update rollup addresses issues with Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 (also available as updates KB956250 and KB982525 for Windows Vista

Some users have reported errors while installing these updates (error code 80200053), if you are not able to install these updates, do a restart and try installing.

Cumulative Update For Windows Media Center For Windows 7 And Windows Vista

Microsoft has released two important updates for Windows Media Center(WMC) running on Windows 7(KB981078) and Windows Vista (KB982480) operating systems on June 21, 2010.

Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows 7 KB981078 addresses the following issues:

1. A “Copy Prohibited” or a black screen is displayed when the Windows Media Center is used to play protected content with a revoked version of the PlayReady PC Runtime is installed don your computer.

2. Mcupdate.exe crashes when the guide database in WMC is corrupted.

3. Schedule data getting disappeared in regions that use in-band guide data.

4. WMC crashes if you use an invalid path for a recorded TV.

June 2010 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista KB982480 fixes the following issue #2 (in addition to various “Hotfixes”) of the issues listed above.

Hotmail users has now something to cheer about, the new Hotmail mobile SMS alerts !! Yes, Windows Live Hotmail is offering free mail alerts via SMS, without requiring a GPRS enabled phone. To get started, follow the steps below:

1. Go this Windows Live Mobile Signup page, login using your Windows Live ID.

2. Now you can add a phone to your Windows Live account. Enter your mobile phone number and click “Next”.

3. You will now receive a verification code as a text message to your phone.

4. Enter the verification code, and select Hotmail under SMS services and click “Save”.

You will now start receiving SMS whenever you get a new mail. You can also configure them to receive alerts from a set of recipients and also the time where during which you can receive them.

Convert .doc To .docx Using MS Word 2010

Ever since Microsoft has introduced Microsoft Office 2007, .docx format replaced the classical .doc format which was used with MS Office 2003 on Windows XP based systems. But then, considering the fact that some of the users still use MS Office 2003 and Windows XP on their machines. If you have created a .doc format office document with earlier versions of MS Office, you might want to convert it to the newest .docx format. Here are the steps that you should follow to convert a document into Office Word 2007/2010 :

Steps:

1. Open the .doc format document in Microsoft Word 2010.

2. Click on the File from the menu. Under the Info tab, you can find a option to “Convert”

3. Click on the Convert button to start the conversion process, you will be prompted warning window saying that the layout of the document may change if you convert the document to newest format. Click on “OK” to continue.

Bing Facebook Map App Shows Your Friends Location On Facebook

Bing Maps team has created a new app called “My friends”, which pulls your data from Facebook profile to show your friends locations on Bing maps.

Just open the My Friends application, login through Facebook Connect, select “Allow” to allow the Bing Maps to connect to your Facebook profile, that’s all you need to. Now the profile pictures of all your friends who have listed a “Current City” in their profile will be pinned to the map,

It’s really fun to see all your friends location on a map like this, just click on the “+” sign that may appear above any of your friends profile pictures to see more friends located in that particular city.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-033 resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows through security update KB979482.

These vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution  through crafted media files or  streaming content from a website or any application that delivers web content, if opened by a user. Then the attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities to gain the same user rights as the user. More serious damage could occur if the user running the system has administrative rights.

Security bulletin MS10-032 include important Windows security update KB979559, which resolves two publicly disclosed vulnerabilities and one privately reported vulnerability  in the Windows kernel-mode drivers. These vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege, if a user just views content that is rendered in a specially crafted TrueType font.
