Bing 404 Plugin For WordPress

wordpress official logo

If you are looking for a plugin to manage 404 error pages in a more better way in your WordPress blog, here’s a plugin “Bing404” for WordPress by Microsoft. Even though WordPress has a default 404 template which avoids otherwise a dead “Page Not Found” error, you might still want to handle 404 error pages better so that you won’t loose your visitors landing your 404 pages accidentally. Bing 404 plugin shows a list of possible pages on your domain via search results based on the keyword  (you may range of domains to narrow down the search).

Follow these steps to start using this in your blog:

1. Download the Bing404 WordPress plugin

2. Upload the plugin to your blog and activate it.

3. Get the Bing App ID using your existing Windows Live ID.

4. Configure the plugin by entering the Bing App ID and you can also customize other settings.

Bing404 plugin configuration

The plugin includes a 404 page, if you check the option to use this 404 page that came with the plugin, it should work without any code modifications. However, if you want to use this plugin with your own 404 page, you may have to add the following code to your template’s 404.php

<?php if(function_exists('bing404_search_bing')) { echo bing404_search_bing(); } ?>

Now that you have implemented the plugin, check the 404 pages yourself. You can learn more about this plugin at thus post by watching the video below:

Google thinks about Google

Bing about Bing

Yahoo about Yahoo

Funny: Microsoft Admits MSNbot is Slow !!

We all know that Bing, the search engine from Microsoft indexes web pages at a slower rate than most of the other search engines (G and Y !! for instance).

But it’s interesting to note that even Microsoft admits the truth about their MSNbot 2.0 which they introduced in November 2009.

Brett Yount, Program Manager @ Bing Webmaster Center replies to the question put forward by an Indian webmaster about only one page of his site being indexed at Bing webmaster community forum.

See his reply in the below screen shot.

Bing MSNbot slow

It is well known in the industry that MSNbot is fairly slow

It’s indeed very much true that Bing indexing is too slow and never indexes a site properly. The good example to quote here would be our Techrena itself.

See these screen shots:

Google shows that it has indexed about 125 pages of Techrena.net

Google Indexing Techrena Bing Indexing: Indexed only 9 pages, out of which 3 are sitemaps !! and this has been static for more than 2 months now.

Bing Techrena Indexing

Perhaps it’s the time Microsoft should really think about increasing the indexing capability of MSNbot (for including in Bing). Are they listening??

Microsoft’s Bing is Buzzing on Internet

Microsoft’s new search engine Bing (Yes, Live search is gone and Bing is here instead).Microsoft’s efforts to bring this ‘Bing’ [http://www.bing.com/]are paying off as of now.Reports are out already that suggest that Bing has overtaken Yahoo as the second preferred search engine in the U.S.

Bing has been set as the default search engine on Internet Explorer 6. bing logoBing is also censoring search results for the searches like ‘sex’ on the search engine.

Microsoft has also started publicizing Bing among mobile phones users worldwide by releasing mobile ring tones called ‘BingTones’.

Has Microsoft delivered something up to Google? Primary tests show that Bing even though may not be a Google spoiler, but definitely a much better product from Microsoft.

Bing is changing it’s background picture daily so that users don’t feel bored.

Reports confirming that Bing has been well received by the internet users worldwide reached even Google which is set to review Microsoft’s new search engine tomorrow.

Good start ,Microsoft!!
