Google Adds Local Search Filtering

Google has finally launched the Local search results, which the search engine giant had already launched the similar local search feature as “Near me now” for high-end Smartphones sometime back.

The options is available in the “Search Options panel” that you can find by clicking (see the pic below)

Search Options panel link

The results will be shown based on your “default location”, that Google decides most of the time based on your internet IP address.

But you can also choose custom location to enter particular City, state name etc.

Also, to get familiar with this feature, try these examples quoted in Google official blog:

>>[things to do on st. patrick’s day] – In the Minneapolis region
>>[food blogs] – Near you
>>[farmers market] – Near the city of Ithaca
>>[dmv] – In the same state as Tucson

Note: As of now, it’s working with Google.com domain only, I tested with Google.co.in where I didn’t notice this feature.

Where To Report About Google & Yahoo Search Result Spam ?

Recently I was searching for a movie review in Google and was astonished to see the Google search results page complete filled with spam results:

Case Study:

Check the below picture for this query in Google.

The top 8 results shown here are spam results.Look at the pattern of the title page carefully, you can easily make out  that these are spam results.

Dare to click any of those results? I did, and I was immediately redirected to another webpage that has no connection with what I was searching, this is definitely cloaking right?

Apart from not giving the desired WebPages that I was looking for, Google giving me pages that are compromising Google index to spam the most popular searches happening at a particular time. Why is the big brother Google pretty calm on this and feeding them, it shouldn’t be doing this right?

Well, if you just think like that and leave it without reporting, may be we are encouraging such spammers  indirectly to grow bigger and bigger so much so that they eat entire Google search results space on your browser.

How  I Can Report Spam in Google Search Results?

Search engines do look into the spam reports submitted by the users, as they take this kind of spamming very seriously. You can report to Google about spam in search results from the below links:

>> If you have a Google Webmaster Tools account, you can report from HERE.

>> If you haven’t got a Google Webmaster tools account, you can still report to Google from here.

Yahoo:

Report Spam in Yahoo Search results here

But in this particular case, virtually 80% of the top 10 results contain spam (above screen shot). No one in this world will have the patience to report if there are that many spam results in one page.Well, Google has to think about this particular issue.

Reopen or Recover Recently Closed Tabs in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a very fast and light browser.

chrome logo

It has many advantages. But it lacks one of the most basic feature. That is, if you accidentally click the close button with multiple tabs open, Google Chrome will not prompt you to verify your action. But other browsers like Mozilla and Internet explorer asks once more as shown below.

mozilla confirmation

Now, in order to compensate this feature, Google Chrome allows you to open the last closed tab or Window once again easily.

So if you accidentally or unintentionally close your tab or the whole Chrome browser, you can simply reopen what you want easily.

This can be done in three ways:

1 Choose what you want to open:

Open Google Chrome. You can see the recently closed tabs section below the most visited pages thumbnail. Choose the one you want to open.

recently closed tabs chrome

2 If you have closed the whole window and you want to reopen all the tabs at once then open Chrome, right click on the window and select Reopen Closed Tab(s) or Reopen Closed Window(s) as shown below:

reopen closed tab chrome

3. By Using the shortcut key (For lazy people like us):

Open Chrome And press

Ctrl + Shift + T

That’s it, you don’t need to worry about your closed tabs anymore and use Chrome as freely as you want with no worries.

Google Responds Again Over Google Buzz Privacy Concerns

Google Buzz official Logo

Well, Google has responded for the second time in the week of the launch of Buzz over the continuous increase in concerns regarding the privacy of the users using Google Buzz .

Google has taken some steps to address these main concerns (if not all), over the Buzz, adding some settings to it.

It’s very rare that see hear the word “sorry” from Google, like this one:

We quickly realized that we didn’t get everything quite right. We’re very sorry for the concern we’ve caused and have been working hard ever since to improve things based on your feedback.

There have been mainly 3 updates in Google Buzz settings from Google based on the user feedback.

#1 No auto-following only auto-suggesting: Google has disabled auto-following in Buzz, you will see auto-suggestions suggesting people to follow instead.

Google Buzz follow suggestions techrena.net

#2 Buzz will not connect your public Picasa Web Albums and Google reader shared items automatically.

#3 Disable Buzz completely:  Google has added a link under settings in Gmail tthat allows you to hide, or completely disable Buzz from Gmail

Google To Experiment Fiber Network For Providing High Speed Internet In US

Google Turns ISP

Google has revealed its plans to setup and test ultra high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the United States.

Google’s fiber-to-the-home connection could offer ultra high speed data transfer up to 1Gbps, 100 times faster than the average access speeds that the Americans currently have.

Initially the service would be offered on a test basis at a competitive price to 50,000 to 500,000 people across the US.

Google will keep collecting responses from various communities over this project till March 26, 2010 and will announce the implementation details of this fiber networking project.

google logo smallgoogle fiber house

Google has listed the following three things as their goals that they are aiming through this project:

  • Next generation apps: Enabling developers to develop bandwidth-intensive killer apps
  • New deployment techniques: Testing new ways to build fiber networks
  • Openness and choice : Operating an “open access” network and let the users have the choice of multiple service providers

I’m jealous of the lucky US people who manage to get Google fiber-to-the-home connection. When India is still struggling with the implementation of 3G services to offer Mbps speeds, Google is thinking of Gbps :(.

[To keep up with 3G rollout in India here’s the latest info: Well, TRAI is considering 4G as well, good news]

What are you planning to doo with a 1Gbps internet connection at home? leave comments..

Google Buzz has just been announced and it’s only available to few unlucky [:)] fellows initially. But if you are curious to know more about it or to use it before you could really get it into your Gmail, well there is a way for you, folks.

Trick here is although Google buzz is not available for all users at present, Google buzz layer by default has been activated to all the users. That means when you log in using your iPhone to Google Buzz page, you can actually see the Buzz layer where you can post updates and read updates from your followers and find more people to follow. So we are now going to spoof our User Agent to be as ‘iPhone’ so that we can see the Google Buzz mobile features in our big desktop screen.

Google Buzz : Google’s One More Attempt @ Social Media

I just woke up this morning and was amazed to see lot of tweeple tweeting about ‘Google Buzz’.The most recent Wave is yet to be received well by people, then what’s all this buzz about ‘Google Buzz’, it was my initial thought.

But you know, my big brother Google is crazy always, keeps giving me surprises every now and then and I have had lot of them in the recent past.Launch of Google Chrome, Andriod, Chrome OS, Wave, Nexus One are only some items of the big list.

Google officially announced Google Buzz, a social networking/ sharing tool built right inside the Gmail. So you need not signup for it again like as you do for Orkut. If it’s enabled for you, you’ll find it inside your Gmail, within the Gmail labels section.

Google Buzz Logo

Google Buzz Official website: http://buzz.google.com/

Google buzz features in short:

  • Lets you automatically follow people that you chat or email most
  • Replies to your posts will be delivered to your Gmail inbox with ‘real time comments’ enabled
  • You can connect with other Social sites like Picasa, Flickr, Google Reader, and Twitter.
  • Buzz on your mobile

The most sensible feature according to me is Google buzz on mobile, oh yeah !! I have already checked it out on iPhone and it’s really looks cool on it.If your phone has GPS, then you can’t miss this one as it shows updates from people nearer to you.

How would it help you, anyway?

Consider a situation that you are driving in your car and there’s a big traffic jam just some distance away from you.You can get this info from this updates from people nearby section (What people are saying in the area).

I think we need to explore it well, before coming to any conclusion that it’s another #Fail. As always, this time to, they have added some intro video of Google buzz, go check it out, if you have patience:

BTW, have similar name to one of their services called Yahoo Buzz, but it’s about just content sharing. And more interesting is that Yahoo has a similar service called Yahoo Updates (from last year) about which hardly anyone of us is aware.Google is strategic announcing Buzz just days before the ‘V-Day’ during which we can expect lot of social media/sharing activity from the youth section of the worldwide internet users.

If anyone got access to Buzz in their Gmail, leave a comment here about your experience with it.Did you like it?
