Reopen or Recover Recently Closed Tabs in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a very fast and light browser.

chrome logo

It has many advantages. But it lacks one of the most basic feature. That is, if you accidentally click the close button with multiple tabs open, Google Chrome will not prompt you to verify your action. But other browsers like Mozilla and Internet explorer asks once more as shown below.

mozilla confirmation

Now, in order to compensate this feature, Google Chrome allows you to open the last closed tab or Window once again easily.

So if you accidentally or unintentionally close your tab or the whole Chrome browser, you can simply reopen what you want easily.

This can be done in three ways:

1 Choose what you want to open:

Open Google Chrome. You can see the recently closed tabs section below the most visited pages thumbnail. Choose the one you want to open.

recently closed tabs chrome

2 If you have closed the whole window and you want to reopen all the tabs at once then open Chrome, right click on the window and select Reopen Closed Tab(s) or Reopen Closed Window(s) as shown below:

reopen closed tab chrome

3. By Using the shortcut key (For lazy people like us):

Open Chrome And press

Ctrl + Shift + T

That’s it, you don’t need to worry about your closed tabs anymore and use Chrome as freely as you want with no worries.

Internet Comes Alive Following Sachin’s First ODI Double Century Stint

February 24, 2010 a day that will go into the cricket history books, or for that matter a day that the entire sporting world will remember.Needless to say this is one of the best moment Indian cricket has ever gifted us.

Sachin Tendulkar becoming the first ever cricketer (male cricketer I’d say) to score an One Day International double century (200) in an innings.[ofcourse also the the highest ODI score ever]

I’m so excited that I’m posting about a sporting event in this technology blog !

Sachin Double century One day internationals

Not many a times that Twitter which normally trends only top gadgets releases etc., is trending Sachin’s historical innings.People tweeted, re-tweeted, replied, blogged #sachin eager to see their cricketing god reaching remarkable figure in cricket history. And just when he passed Saeed Anwar’s 194 mark, people just had gone on their feet in excitement and that’s just the beginning and continued till he reached his 200 in the 50th over of the innings in the Gwalior 2nd one day match against South Africa.

I wonder how many tweets it has added to twitter’s 50 million tweets per day mark. Not to mention about so many status updates about lauding Sachin in Facebook as well as in Orkut & Google Buzz. And I expect IPL 3 (coming in 2 weeks) YouTube deal will just bring more buzz about cricket on the internet.

Twitter Is Hitting 50 Million Tweets Per Day !!

The world’s most popular microblogging site Twitter has revealed site metrics in a blog post earlier today.

As per the data chart provided, you can see that the number of tweets per day have been are on the rise exponentially and just crossing 50 million mark in Jan-Feb 2010.

Twitter tweets per day chart

The number of tweets per day have gone up from 5,000 tweets per day in 2007 to 300,000 in 2008, to 2.5 million per day in 2009, and now they have grown enormously to 50 million tweets per day (600 tweets per second on average).

These values are exclusive of the tweets from twitter accounts marked as spam.Twitter however has to go a long way to if it wants to beat the giant sites in its genre like YouTube that serves a billion videos every day and Facebook where users spend 8 billion minutes per day.

Search Engine Land blog has an interesting post comparing Facebook, twitter and the new bee Google Buzz:

Facebook status updates: 700 per second
Twitter tweets: 600 per second
Buzz posts: 55 per second

Play HTML5 Videos In Internet Explorer Using This Codec

You might be aware of the fact that many of the online video streaming sites like YouTube, Vimeo have started supporting HTML5 videos.

You can watch HTML5 videos if you use latest versions of browsers like Firefox 3.6 or Google Chrome 4.

However if you are still using Internet Explorer (let me remind you folks, YouTube gonna stop support for IE6 from March 13), there’s a way you can watch HTML5 videos. That’s by using the plugin developed for Internet Explorer by Cristian Adam.

HTML5 Internet Explorer

The plugin called Xiph.org Ogg Codec gives an option for users to add support for <video>tag in IE that enables the HTML5 video support in Internet Explorer.

Download the Xiph.Org Ogg Codecs plugin here

“YouTube in IE6” May Be History From March 13, 2010:

YouTube has started warning the users using old browsers about it’s support for such old version s of the browsers.

As seen on  this YouTube FAQ page, the users using old version browsers will see the following message starting from March 13, 2010:  (And remember Internet Explorer 6 fellows, this one’s for you)

YouTube in IE6 may be history

In mid-2009 we started notifying users that YouTube would stop support for certain older browser versions. If you’d like the best YouTube viewing experience, we recommend that you upgrade to the most recent version of your browser.

Support stops on March 13th. Stopped support essentially means that some future features on YouTube will be rolled out that won’t work in older browsers.

While they may not stop supporting Internet Explorer 6 completely it says that all the upcoming new features to be incorporated in YouTube may not be supported by browsers like IE6, Firefox 2.0, Firefox for Mac OS X 10.3.9 Panther – version 2.0.0.20 etc.

This applies to the following browsers:

  • Any browser older than Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0

Google Docs Launches “Server Clipboard” Feature

Google is testing a new feature in Google Docs called “Server Clipboard”.

As of now, it’s not available in every account, or it may be the case even though if it’s active for your account you may not actually spotted the small “clipboard’ symbol just after the “undo” and “redo” buttons.

Server clipboard button in Google Docs

What Does This Mean?

It’s like a normal clipboard that we use in our PCs but the difference here is that, the contented copied in this clipboard gets stored on Google servers (Basically it’s a server-side clipboard based a.k.a “cloud clipboard” that lets you copy and paste items from one PC to another). That means this data would be available to all the Google applications like Gmail, Google Calendar or Google Docs.

It also also you to copy multiple items from Google docs. You can actually see all the items you have copied in “Server Clipboard” from its menu.Server clipboard is offering both HTML and plain text formats for copy/paste.Also the text that you have copied in the Server Clipboard will exist on Google’s servers for 30 days. You use “Clear all items” to delete all items present currently in the Server Clipboard.

Server Clipboard Copied Items2

There’s also a separate Google help article has been made available for “Server Clipboard”.

While you can refer to the above help article for more about this feature, we are here quoting the procedure to use the Server clipboard in Google docs from that article.

STEPS:

  1. Select what you’d like to copy. Click the Server clipboard menu that appears in the toolbar of your document.server_clipboard logo
  2. Click Copy selection to server clipboard.
  3. In the destination document, click the server clipboard menu; you’ll see the selection that you previously copied. If you copied multiple things, you’ll see a list of the items you’ve recently copied.(Refer to the screen shot in this post)
  4. Place the cursor where you want to paste the content. (Currently you can paste it in Google Docs only, but we can expect Gmail support soon)
  5. Click the Server clipboard menu.
  6. Select what you want to paste. Depending on your selection, you’ll see different formats that you can choose from to paste what you’ve copied (for example, HTML or plain text).
  7. Select a format.

Login to your Docs account and verify whether you’ve got this feature.

Setting Preferred Domain In Google Webmaster Tools

The Problem: I use Google Webmaster Tools(GWT) for my website “example.com”.I want my Preferred domain to be “www.example.com”.I tried to set the preferred domain in Webmaster Tools but an error message

Display URLs as  “www.example.com” and hit save, then I get this error: “Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://example.com/. Please verify http://example.com/.”

keeps coming and I don’t have no idea what this error is !! So how to set preferred domain in Google Webmaster Tools?

Google Webmaster Tools Logo

The Solution:

Well, this very common question that many webmasters (or at least beginners I would say)  keep asking in various webmaster forums. You have a website example.com and you want Google to pass all your link juice to www version of your site, www.example.com.So you go to Google Webmaster Tools and you verify your GWT account for www.example.com either by using an HTML meta tag or using HTML file upload method. Then you go to “Settings” under “Site Configuration” and tries to change “Preferred domain” settings (www or non-www).

You keep the option “Display URLs as www.example.com” and tries to save the settings, and you get the above mentioned error message.[See the pic below ]

Preferred domain settings in GWT

You might not understand what it means at the first sight, like me :).What it means is that you need to verify the non-www version of your website as well. Even though it may look a bit weird to you, just go ahead, start adding “example.com” (non-www version of your site) in your GWT.

non www version in GWT

Please note that you need not re-verify your website in GWT, when you are asked to verify your site, select the verification method that you had earlier used for verifying your www-version of site, www.example.com and hit “Verify” .Your website would be automatically verified and would be added to your sites in GWT.

Now go to Preferred domain from “example.com” settings and select “Display URLs as www.example.com “ and press save.

successful preferred domain change

Now you have successfully set your preferred domain as “www.example.com” i.e to the www-version of your website. Now Google restricts all link juice to  non-www version of your website.

Note:

  • Here I’ve randomly chosen www version  as preferred domain it can be opposite case also, you can choose non-www version of your site also as preferred domain, but the procedure still remains the same.
  • You must first have already verified your preferred domain in your Google Webmaster Tools  profile.
  • Even though you have set your preferred domain, it’s always a best practice to use one type of links only, either www version based or non-www version based.Avoid using mix of them (like example.com/123.htm at one page and www.example.com/123.htm on another page).
  • You may want to use a 301 redirect to redirect traffic from your non-preferred domain once you have chosen your preferred domain in GWT.

WordPress 2.9.2

wordpress logo

WordPress has updated it’s famous blogging platform from earlier version 2.9.1 to 2.9.2.This addresses the problem where untrusted logged in users can secretly look into the trashed posts belonging to other authors.

The reason we should all upgrade our WordPress to 2.9.2 according to WordPress developers:

If you have untrusted users signed up on your blog and sensitive posts in the trash, you should upgrade to 2.9.2.

This is a minor update but considering the fact that it is addressing a security issue, we may not want to take chance, and if you have configured Google friend connect for your WordPress blog, keep in mind that all the users who have subscribed to your blog as members, would be treated as users signed up to your blog by WordPress, and what it means that there’s a possibility that these users when logged in can peek at your trashed posts.

Use Tools>Upgrade menu from your dashboard to upgrade to WordPress 2.9.1 or
